Mike
Eccles
Principal
Cornet
Mike
began his playing career at the age of 7 with the Poynton Youth
Brass Band, progressing through the ranks and eventually onto
the Principal Chair. During this time, Mike progressed
his way through the ranks of both the Hazel Grove Brass band and
also the Cheshire Youth Brass Band, in which attained
the Principal Cornet position.
At
the age of 18, he joined the Fodens Band where he spent two
and a half years. During his time at Fodens, the band won
the Spennymoor Entertainments contest, two North West Area's
and the National Championships of Great Britain in 1999.
Mike
then moved onto the Front Row of the Yorkshire Building Society
Band under the direction of Professor Dave King, who he was studying under at the Salford University. During this
time, the band won the British open, and the European Championships.
After
a year at YBS, Mike moved back to Fodens
on Repiano Cornet before being recruited again by YBS
on the Assistant Principal seat (again winning the Open and
the European). Next came a move to Hepworth for a short period
on the Bumper up seat, before moving back to Fodens on Repiano again. Then came the move to the Fairey Band on the
Repiano seat in 2004.
Mike is now the Bands Principal Cornet, a position which he has held since late 2006. He looks forward to many more years with Faireys and has admitted he wants to best Brian Taylor's 20 year record as topman.
During
Mike's playing career he has enjoyed many contest and concert
successes and would like to thank the band for giving him
the opportunity.
