Mark Harrison
Soprano Cornet

Born in Salford, Mark lives in Whitefield and was brought up in a musical family and began his musical career with Astley youth band at the age of 6.  He quickly progressed on to soprano cornet and went on to join the Bolton youth brass band.  On starting high school at Bury Grammar School he developed a keen interest in musicianship and all other areas of music.  Whilst moving to Eccles Borough Brass band with his parents, he took up the saxophone, piano and also began to pursue his talent in singing.

He secured a place in the National Children’s Brass Band of Great Britain, and the Halle youth choir under the direction of James Burton who became a huge influence to him.  After some time at Eccles and receiving teaching from the MD at the time Kevin Donaldson, he moved to Besses Boys Band.  Soon after this he joined the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain and also made history by becoming the youngest person ever to join the Halle Choir at the age of 16.  At this time he also made the move to join the Ashton-Under-Lyne Band.  At the start of his A levels he gained a place at the Junior RNCM to study cornet with Tracey Redfearn and voice with Jeffrey Lawton.  Whilst at the Junior RNCM he made the decision to apply for Music College on Trumpet and picked up a trumpet for the first time in his life during his first term at the Junior RNCM.  With the help of Tracey Redfearn he quickly progressed and successfully secured a place to study at the RNCM with a scholarship on trumpet.  Marks musical talent has broadened at a substantial rate, becoming a keen composer, arranger and conductor.

During his time at the Junior RNCM he has enjoyed many concerts with Brass ensemble and Jazz Band, where he has appeared as both a trumpet and vocal soloist.  Mark is thrilled to begin studying at the RNCM later this year and intends to become a professional trumpeter, working as a soloist and orchestral player.  He also would like to venture into the area of teaching, and of course to keep Jeffrey Lawton happy, continue his vocal studies also.

Mark is extremely happy to be appointed the Soprano Cornet player for the Fairey Band, and hopes to enjoy a long succesful time with them.
