Cornet
Jimmy
began his playing career on the cornet in 1967 with the Whitburn
Junior Band, until he moved on to the Whitburn Burgh Band in
1970 on second cornet. During his time there he worked his way
up to bumper up until he joined the Clydebank Burgh Band on
Principal Cornet in September 1977 under his teacher Nigel Boddice.
In
1979 Jimmy moved south of the border and joined the Fodens
Motor Works Band on front row and also became employed by
the Fodens Motor Company.
The
National Champions of 1980 Brighouse and Rastrick then invited
Jimmy into thier ranks in January 1981. With them, he won
the European Championships and then made the move back across
the Pennines to play for the Fairey Band where he has remained
ever since.
Like
many brass bands, their "roots" originate from the
works company and Jimmy is the last member of the band to
work for the company. Jimmy is also the librarian and has
been for the past 20 years.
